Pay rise naive at the very least
2:51pm Tuesday 8th January 2013 in Letters
THE Labour councillor for Blackwood makes a fair defence of the Caerphilly Labour councillors’ actions and subsequent apology over the senior management pay rises.
The decision to change the way in which future decisions are taken must be commended. Yet, I wonder if the apology and changes were made as a result of the public outrage, action by the trade unions, and stand taken by Plaid councillors? In terms of the initial decision taken to award the huge pay rises, I wonder if the Labour councillor would agree if I suggest that the Labour Party leaders of Caerphilly Council acted naively? After all, both of the deputy leaders were members of the remuneration committee which took the decision to award the pay rises. It must be fair to say that the Labour Party leaders were out of touch with the mood of the public and council employees at that time.
