Centre could house ship

IT WAS a great shock to hear of the closure of the Pill Millennium Centre, as it was a most popular venue for many groups.

However, I feel that out of adversity can come new light.

Perhaps the council might consider passing this to a new community group, not linked to communities first or any other initiative. This would make a perfect setting and permanent home for the Newport Ship, a Maritime Museum and Heritage Centre for the Pill and Newport communities.

And with some expansion I see no reason why sporting activities and the arts couldn’t find a compatible home within the complex. Funding could be applied for through a voluntary initiative to the EU and National Lottery.

Sustainability might come in part from commercial activities such as, regular international food and drink markets, antique fairs and sensible admission fees. I think this is time for a public debate on its future before yet another expensive piece of dereliction appears.

Sadly I do not think your idea would last long. The town is dying on its ar*e. Too few visitors to keep the place going.

The Pill Millennium Centre couldn't sustain itself so it went under.

Combining those two with having to build a structure to house a very old boat and protect it from the elements. Seems unlikely.
