Council has its priorities right

THE latest kerfuffle over Newport council’s proposal to axe its funding to the GMSS bemuses me somewhat.

I have been a musician for more than 70 years, but I support the council on this one. The GMSS talks of a division of poor and elitists. I was a miner for ten years and my father a miner before that, but that didn’t stop me achieving most of my aims in music, academically and performing-wise, without any help or financial support other than my family and personal sacrifices. Newport Council has got its priorities right in wanting to use the money for first class general education for all and the GMSS must acknowledge that life is not one big freebie.
