Cronyism? leave it out

I READ with interest your correspondent’s report and comments of Mr Ian Johnston’s selection and the recent appointment confirmation of the new deputy PCC, his former colleague, Mr Paul Harris.

While I appreciate that your reporter’s intentions were in the interest of us all, I object to the added publicity given to phrases such as “cronyism of the worst kind” etc. I, as a “fully paid-up” member of the Newport public, also have an opinion, which is that I am confident that Mr Johnston would not have chosen a former colleague, or anyone else, for that matter, without considerable serious thought beforehand, and taken everything into account. I am confident that this is one occasion when a promotion is given and that hard work and integrity has NOT been jeopardised in any way, purely and simply because of ANY earlier friendship, professional OR otherwise.

Anyone else holding public office did this they would be charged with corruption. Still, once a copper, always a copper.

I'm allowed to change my mind on this in light of new information. Cronyism might well be a deserved tag for how the jobs have filled across the country.

Don't worry Mr. Bassett, they won't take any notice of public disapproval. They didn't let a silly little thing like that stop them going ahead in the first place did they?
