Policy leads to blandness

I RECENTLY contacted my local councillor, Charles Ferris, about the naming of new streets.

I suggested that as a small step in promoting Newport as a progressive city we might use the names of, for example, Lise Meitner, Emmy Noether, Marie Curie and Irene Joliot-Curie. This is an international selection of women scientists. Mr Ferris was informed by “Street Scene” that the names of individuals were no longer used because one person’s hero was another’s villain.

A blanket ban and blandness seems to have replaced judgement.

Jimmy Savile Drive anyone? Oops, yep, think they tried that one. Not only are some heroes other peoples villains (Margaret Thatcher), but some heroes become villains when history reviews them.

Really? Marie Curie could be someone's villain? Who's? Who ever they are their opinion shouldn't count.

I really hope this isn't a feminist agenda mind, because that would be lame.
