Take a pay cut, save cinema

HAVING just read that the Market Hall cinema in Brynmawr and the leisure centre in Nantyglo may close due to lack of money: Have the councillors thought of taking a pay cut in order to save jobs?

There are 42 elected members representing 16 wards. We are constantly being told We’re All In It Together (some more than others). If they halved the money they are paid then I have no doubt they could keep the cinema open or leisure centre or maybe both. There are rumours going around that should the cinema close they are hoping to have a Wetherspoons. If this was true I would be totally against it.

There are already too many public houses in Brynmawr. There are also too many takeaways in the town. Maybe someone from the local authority could let us know if the rumours are true. I look forward to a possible reply.

The decisions about members allowances are not made at council level so they cannot comply with your simplistic request. How about paying a little more tax and stop demanding a lot for a little. We cannot demand a scandinavian level of public services in exchange for american levels of tax. People in the rest of europe pay far more.
