Bring M&S back to the centre

I AGREE with the letter written by Angela Roberts (January 26). Having enjoyed shopping in Newport, using the market and M & S every Friday for the past 35 years. I agree, we need Marks and Spencer back in the town centre if only for food and perhaps a coffee shop. I enjoyed a coffee after my shopping each week and meeting up with many regulars doing the same. I am sure a M & S Simply Food and cafe would be welcomed back and well used by many who work in the city centre.

Clearly shopping in Newport only once a week wasn't enough to keep M&S open.

Godobe has hit the nail on the head. By moving to an out-of-town area with better parking facilities and a better shop floorplan / arrangement etc, M&S has avoided having to leave Newport entirely. Otherwise trade would have slowly continued to bleed to Culverhouse Cross, Cwmbran and Cribbs' Causeway. The antiquated shop in Newport centre was totally inadequate for today's needs, with concrete cancer and 1950s technology still extant.

Perhaps those too tight to part with a couple of quid for a day rover on the bus (or indeed using their FREE OAP bus passes) to venture out to Spytty will instead prefer to keep one of the tireless independent coffee shops and clothes stalls in the market open with their patronage?
