Glad to see ship ditched

SO our council is at last proposing to “dispose of” the remains of the medieval ship. About time, it’s something I have been suggesting for years. If proposed cuts in its budget up to 2016 amount to £290,000, how much has been wasted on this pile of timber?

How many far more worthy causes might have benefitted, how many services funded and enhanced?

In these days of tight budgets, I for one would prefer to see shrinking council resources spent on meals on wheels rather than splinters on the river. Even Councillor Ferris seems at a loss to predict its future other than the threat of its preservation in concrete. For different reasons he and I find no comfort in the statement all options are being considered. Perhaps this may be due to Debbie Wilcox’s preoccupation with “other pressing issues.” Julian R Powell Larch Grove Newport

OMG the OP is sadly deluded-there is nothing like this vessel in the UK today-do you want our history to be obliterated?-or would you prefer that our city fathers spend it on "worthwhile" projects like the Wave, the footbridge to nowhere, bus lanes that cause even more traffic chaos, the smoked salmon and Chablis lunches consumed at our expense???

Maybe the crew of the ship were attempting to sail away from ye olde Newport. Although I bet they had more shops open in those days.

The last time a labour council tried to dump the ship, they were voted out, if they want more time in opposition, keep going!

The ship has not been proven as a very important ship. It was merely found in the docks area. It is certainly nothing as grand as the Mary Rose. With centres closing and social reforms hitting our purses it is time to draw a line on the vast expenditure which has been drained from our purses.
