Hooray for the restoration

AFTER watching with dismay the decline and decay of Lysaght’s Institute it was with great pleasure that I heard that its restoration had been completed. How well I remember going there as a girl with my family for crisps and lemonade on a summer’s afternoon or attending a fete.

Congratulations to the council, individuals and groups that championed this landmark’s rejuvenation. Relating to another institution, I was saddened to hear of the demise of the Orb Club with no public denouncing of its closing. This social club was started by the workers of Lysaght’s over a hundred years ago and has been a centre for social events ever since. My grandfather was a founding member and three subsequent generations followed in his footsteps. I wonder what will happen now to the Jenkins Street “Orb” now?
