Good display if you can find it

LIKE many others I am concerned about Newport Council’s decision to discontinue special exhibitions at the Museum and Art Gallery.

I recently visited the Arthur Machen exhibition, which runs until April 6. This was really excellent, exactly the sort of thing the museum should be doing: showcasing a writer from the local area and illustrating how his upbringing and the landscape of Monmouthshire influenced his work. However, it took a bit of finding. I only knew about it thanks to an article in the Argus. I saw no advertisement for it at the entrance and no signs directing people once they were in the museum. The only other visitor to the exhibition while I was there had to ask museum staff to direct him to the gallery. Is the council trying to keep it a secret? Is this lack of information and publicity part of a cunning plan to keep visitor numbers low so that they can justify withdrawing this service?
