People need social outlets

IT IS a pity that adult education classes at Brynglas House will be ceasing. For years, it has been a popular venue for various classes attended by local people. As our local facilities are being eroded, I do hope that the existing venues will be the recipients of increased funding. It is important that people have somewhere in which to further their hobbies and interests. These venues are important for retired people, as there are few facilities in Newport at the moment.

Years ago when miners came to dig coal in Wales there was nothing socially, they clubbed together established institutes for work, learning and recreation, built swimming pools, libraries etc, looks like if we want all this back we have to fund it like our grandparents did. It only came about via philanthropic people like the Lords of tredegar as it was,the philanthropists today doesn't exist. If they did they wouldn't fund ad infinitum, it is why charity is running scared of closures now. The feeling today is I might want to use it, so why isn't it provided and free ? not on really !

If you want to keep these places alive then the fees have got to cover the admin, course and overheads and stop offering free or subsidised courses. Courses should be run to easily break even without LA oversubsidising.

'Some' subsidising is necessary, else we prevent those without the means learning. For the others yes they should pay going rate. There is a case for making further education free for the unemployed, they don't get jobs because they aren't educated ! Why they go to school for 18 years first to emerge no wiser than when they went in beats me, I started work at 15. Did college after an apprenticeship ... sorted, not wasted 6-7 years in a college for time wasters studying east enders, reality TV and 'media' but unable to write a sentence properly or count..
