Pubs better than settee

WITH the closures of the Risca House Inn and the Manor Inn in Pontymister/ Risca, the community is left with just ten of the original 32 pubs it had in its heyday; this is due to soaring sales of alcohol in supermarkets, shops and garages at prices no landlord can compete with.

It’s a sad reflection of the times we live in. Pubs were once the pillars of the community, where education on any subject was freely available, (sometimes with a pinch of salt, especially in the evenings) To close one of these halls of wisdom leaves a great void in any community that no supermarket can replace. So if you find yourself with a few spare shillings, support your local: it’s better than getting intoxicated on the settee, wondering who lives next door.

Pubs are certainly easier to manage than the uncontrolled cheap boozing offered via off licences which are breeding faster than your average flies. We really do need by-laws to severely limit off licence sales, and close a few who are clearly NOT convinced stores unless your customers are dedicated alcoholics.

For too long the excuse these corner shops provide an public service has long gone, no-one would go to these shops for a bottle of milk or loaf of bread, after certain hours to run the gauntlet of children, asking you to buy them drink, or booze ridden adults.

The 'Public service' argument they put up is frankly obscene. As is the state declaration to raise prices to pimp off the drink addicted customers instead of treating them. Public houses have rules and by their nature can monitor poor drinking and behaviours.

There is no social attitude in Newport's pubs, just booze-fuelled chavs who make the town centre their own alcohol-fuelled domain, and hence to the Gwent Hospital to make medical staff lives a misery. families have deserted Newport Centre, they aren't welcome, and they feel at risk.

Maybe we need to go back to pub closures at 10:30 and stop the ludicrous option of 24hr drinking or even starting at 8 am of a morning, you really have to question why anyone would want to go to buy drink at that early hour.

Why do we have migrants ? are they the only ones sober ?

£2.50 to £3.00 a pint! No wonder pubs are shutting down. Not everyone can afford a night out so many people have their friends over instead. Nothing to do with alcoholics or chavs, just people who want to have a fun night drinking with friends without becoming penniless in the process.

why pay 3 pounds for a pint then when you go to the loo its dirty and dilapidated with no decent washing facilities. Rather get a nice bottle or something from the supermarket and use a clean toilet. These pubs have lost custom because people these days demand decent facilities and they won't spend the money to supply decent facilities.
