Opening of town baths

WITH reference to the photo in the Argus on the 22nd on page 18, I believe this to be the opening ceremony of Pontllanfraith Swimming Baths, in about 1938? I don’t know the gent in front of the microphone, but I do recognize the person in the background alongside the gent in the black trilby as Mr Lyndon Dark, who was the housing officer for Mynyddislwyn Urban District Council.

Furthermore I remember that the baths superintendent was a Mr Jack Musselwhite, who also worked for the council in the “rent dept”. He also helped in the Mortuary next to the baths but in what capacity I don’t know.

This photo would have been taken on the flat roof [sundeck] of the baths’ changing rooms and the houses in the top right of photo would be Islwyn Terrace.

Mr Pasco (Of Pasco's scrap yard opposite the old railway lower level station), was one face there at the pool opening too. I had to go to Pont swimming baths most weeks from the old sec tech school next to Vic's cafe on Ivor's road, and in the winter we broke the ice to go swimming. No warm water for us !
