Put a stop to this disposal

IN response to Cllr Miqdad Al-Nuaimi’s letter concerning the Chartist mural I stand by what I said in 2008.

I still would like to see the murals preserved even though the wall on which the mosaic is mounted will cease to exist in the proposal redevelopment. At least the previous administration, of which I was part, had a plan to replicate the mural in its entirety in ceramic and site it along the staircase of the museum and art gallery. The current administration of which Cllr Al-Nuaimi is part is seriously considering moving the library, art gallery and museum into the space occupied by the sports hall in the Newport leisure centre. They will then, no doubt, “dispose of” the John Frost Square museum site, staircase and all. Our present Labour-ruled council appears hell bent on “disposing of” everything of cultural value in our city. What soul or identity will Newport be left with?
