Bright lights could well go

NOT content with Newport being a retail wasteland, the council seems intent on making our city a cultural wasteland too with their recent decision to cut the Temporary Arts Exhibition Programme, among other things, as part of a £7 million budget cut.

I wonder if the Argus were being deliberately mischievous in accompanying the report on the cuts (Feb 27) with a photograph of the Civic Centre at night lit up like Blackpool Illuminations? How much money could be saved by turning off those lights at night, as indeed could be saved if the powerful searchlights that light up the Transporter Bridge were turned off too? It’s galling to think that our street light turns off at 10pm to save money yet the Transporter Bridge is still lit up brightly after this time.
