Robust action will be taken

MR JONES has his facts wrong about the Wales Audit Office (WAO’s) report on Caerphilly council’s ‘senior remuneration committee’ meeting last year (Letters, March 11).

In fact, there were only three officers at that meeting, and five councillors. And since that meeting, Caerphilly council’s Labour leadership has acted decisively to deal with the issues raised by the meeting: In December 2012, Labour councillors apologised to the public for the unacceptably high pay rises for senior officers; In January 2013, the Labour-led Caerphilly council rescinded the pay award and implemented a fairer compromise agreement; On March 8, the council suspended chief executive Anthony O’Sullivan in the light of WAO criticisms. Mr Jones, and other Caerphilly county borough residents, can be assured that the issues raised by the WAO report that will be dealt with robustly and as quickly as possible.

Let's make it absolutely clear. The Labour councillors only recinded the pay award for Mr O'Sullivan. It did nothing about the other 20 senior officers who have been awarded a share out of around £1.5 million.
Cllr Kirby appears to be quite satisfied to hang Mr O'Sullivan out to dry for the total mismanagement by himself and his labour colleagues over this whole sad and sorry situation that has resulted in this police investigation,.

A "fairer" compromise agreement was reached. He and other senior managers still had a pay rise. This was unacceptable. Mr O'sulliavan and the directors who also benefitted from this disgraceful episode stood in front of staff and told them there would be a pay freeze for 3 to 5 years. They told staff the only people who would receive a pay rise would be teachers due to the national pay agreement. They told them that "we are all in this together", then they and the councillors in this meeting stabbed each and every caerphilly employee in the back. The council's response? Let's not rescind the pay rises, let's not uphold the sneior managers promises that everyone would be together in a pay freeze. No, let's spit in the faces of the rest of our emplyee's by still giving senior managers a pay rise! Shame on you Cllr Kirby, and the rest of your colleagues. Labour party used to support the working person, shame on you all

So a "Labour" Council freezes pay for the workers while handing £1.5million pounds extra to the top managers. It seems the only problem they have with their actions is that, despite their best efforts, the public discovered them. You might try to justify things Cllr Kirby - I hope people will look for a real Labour person to vote for come the next elections.
