City taskforce a great idea

I WAS delighted to hear that the Welsh Government is setting up a taskforce to look at how to regenerate Newport city centre, and it is desperately needed.
The life has been draining out of the city centre for quite a while with big-name retailers heading out of town and strong competition for shoppers’ pounds from Cwmbran and Cardiff. A Freedom of Information request by my office recently gave an illustration of the extent of the problem over empty shops. I want to see a vibrant Newport and I hope this initiative will lead to an imaginative strategy. It is important that everyone pulls together in the future. I know that in Caerphilly county borough, for instance, the town managers work well with business in centres and also assist with other agencies to attract investment and businesses.
