Safety for all

OBVIOUSLY, cyclists’ safety on our rural and urban roads is essential, with the excellent Argus article (September 10) emphasizing the importance of protective helmets, visible jackets, lights (and a bell?) and so on. This should apply to scooters and skateboards.
The council’s Highways departments, the Welsh Assembly, Gwent Police’s Traffic Elite and the bike manufacturers should have used some brain power years ago and prepared for the increased volume of road traffic problems, especially speeding and dangerous parking. Why do ‘experts’ continue to overlook the danger to all pedestrians (including Newport’s shopping areas and residential areas)?
Recently, Gwent Police pursued two cars, being driven ‘erratically’ into Bank Street, St Julian’s and described it as a ‘one off’, whereas too many ‘erratic’ motorists are a daily and nightly menace on this residential street, accessing a school, public park and other residential streets. Hopefully our PCC Mr Ian Johnston will come to our rescue?
