YOU don’t get it, do you? It is because the mural is a tourist attraction that Newport council wants to get rid of it. They have done all sorts to discourage visitors.
They allowed Cardiff to hijack the regular bus service between Newport and Abergavenny. They also closed the public toilets near the National Express bus terminals. This year, just before summer, they closed the Tourist Information Centre at the main library, but they still employ three ladies to tell tourists “sorry, we cannot give you any information.”
Questions need to be asked and answered why Newport council is trying to destroy Newport. I have travelled widely in South East Wales this summer – all other towns are trying to attract visitors and tourists because they spend money.
The latest in the Chartist mural saga is that the council has placed screens around it to hide it – whether to stop anyone looking at it or to hide its destruction, I do not know. Anyone wishing to reach the bus station from John Frost Square is directed down a long flight of steps. In High Street outside the Market, the previously level pavement has been replaced by steps – why?
The Westgate Hotel is being allowed to fall into disrepair. It should be turned into a Chartist Museum – ground floor. The existing library and museum in John Frost Square should be moved in the Westgate. The former council tax office in High Street should be turned into a tourist and visitor information centre similar to the one at Abergavenny bus station.
