THAT IN many people’s eyes the destruction of the Chartist mural in Newport is a disgrace needs no further comment from me. Mentioning comment; there have been the bouts of hairshirt pulling, demands for resignation for those responsible, organisation of public protests etc over this issue from Gwent’s so-called socialist MPs?
For decades Messers Murphy, Flynn, etc, have extolled the heritage of the Chartist movement, usually on the lines of, “without the Chartists there would be no Labour Party” etc. So having made a nice living from the heritage of Chartism, why are they (to my knowledge, if wrong I will apologise), so silent with regard to the destroyed symbol of that cause they once extolled so vocally? One in which men from Blaenavon, Garndiffaith, Pontypool etc died.
Am I a cynic in thinking that if Newport was a Tory-, rather than Labour-run council that this silence from the Rt Hon members would not occur... Some socialists, eh!
