WHILE the dust still hangs in the air, there remains a solution to the issue of the Chartist Mural.
The council should underwrite the recreation of the mural. There are high resolution images on record, so it can be done.
But to make it easy, the mural should be recreated with the aid of Newport children.
The council should pay for the materials – ceramic tiles etc (not particularly expensive), they also pay for somebody to sketch it out and do the preparation work, and of course provide the permanent location.
The original mural was on panels, so pre-marked-up panels could be distributed to schools for them to do. Then it’s all brought together in a big, happy-smiley assembly day, with loads of pictures and positive PR for everyone.
No shopping developments would be delayed or threatened, the people of Newport get their mural back, and the council gets a get-out-of-jail-card.
