WHAT AN appalling saga is the destruction and manner in which it took place of the Chartist mural in Newport!
I am a relative newcomer to this city but respect the history of the Chartist movement as a huge part of this city’s heritage. Yes, upgrading the city centre is necessary, I am not convinced all avenues to save or relocate the mural were properly explored. Questions need answers and frankly, where is the man who should be giving those answers?
I refer to the leader of NCC, Bob Bright, who is noticeable by his absence, leaving his chief officer to take the flak for decisions which his ruling party makes. Did he agree the manner and timing of the mural’s destruction? If he did then he has ridden roughshod over those who hoped to find a way of saving it.
If he didn’t or had no knowledge of it he is not on top of his job. High time for Mr Bright to come out of hiding and answer for his party’s actions in this matter. I look forward to hearing what you have to say.
