IN RESPONSE to the full page letter from Michael Sheen, may I send greetings to Meyrick his father who for a short time served alongside me as N.E.U. Shop Stewards in the C.EW. Llanwern Steelworks. The location of the Chartist Memorial wasn’t very suitable and the opportunity to erect a replacement should be taken up, and the circumstances of the destruction set aside. However, I am concerned that too many people in Wales think that the movement originated in Wales, whereas the driving force and leadership lay with Bronterre O’Brien and Fergus O’Connor the latter being the architect and presenter of the Charter in 1848.
So let us now concentrate on getting a modern recognition of the invaluable role the Chartists played, although an Annual Parliament in the present circumstances would be unwieldy.
