EARLIER this year 77 MPs from all parties signed a House of Commons Early Day Motion marking the 175th anniversary of the publication of the People’s Charter, the founding document of what would become the Chartist movement.
Without doubt some of the MP signatories for this motion would have been strangely silent on the issue of the Chartist mosaic destruction; Gwent Labour MPs.
Oh well. I’m sure they’ll be glad to know that a permanent exhibition on Chartism is being developed within the Houses of Parliament right now.
Perhaps an ideal place for Newport’s Labour- run council to send what remains of the broken mosaic, as a display of what today’s “socialist” administration in Newport really think about their heritage.
