AS LAST Wednesday’s Editorial says, now that a belated apology has been issued, it is time to move on. Consultation on a replacement for the much lamented mural has now ended and many thoughtful suggestions have been forthcoming.
It should be remembered that affection is not just for the historic People’s Charter, nor just for the heroic, if ill-advised, sacrifice of the local Chartists. It is also for the actual mural that is now just a memory.
My preference would be for the initial suggestion of a full size reproduction of the original mural in modern, weather resistant materials in a suitable public location. The best site I have seen suggested is the bland front of British Home Stores in Commercial Street, close to Westgate Square. BHS should feel honoured and encouraged to contribute to the cost.
Whatever that cost, the Council should underwrite it, as a penance for the mishandling of the matter. I would suggest grant applications, a public appeal and an approach to those who have already contributed or pledged. My reluctant second choice would be the tiled version suggested for the Library stairway, which presumably would move with the Library, if that happens, or the Market entrance wall.
