ONE OF the main reasons why Newport city centre has not been a resounding success over the last 50 years is because the roads and streets are too narrow for large modern vehicles. As a consequence deliveries to and from businesses is made extremely difficult. Most of the thoroughfares in the city centre retain the same proportions and configuration as they did 200 years ago. Therefore, in my opinion, if the city centre is to survive, improvements to the inner city roads need to be made. Therefore, it is imperative that a new, city centre, ring road should be constructed along with new buildings and public spaces over the next ten years.

I would suggest the following route. Starting, say, at the Old Green roundabout, thence to Queensway, Bridge Street, North Street, Waters Lane, School Lane, Talbot Lane, the rear of Commercial Street as far as Myra Place, and then to the junction of Cardiff Road/Kingsway, then along Kingsway to the Old Green roundabout.

The construction of this road would entail demolishing a number of properties. However, like trees in a forest it is sometimes necessary to remove the old, to make way for the new, otherwise extinction is inevitable.
