THE new entrance to Newport Market is a substantial improvement for customers and long-suffering traders alike. It is marred, for me, only by the multi-level approaches and the ridiculous hieroglyphics on the pillar. I thought that I should have studied Mandarin... or nipped to Specsavers opposite.

However, the curved wall immediately inside does provide the perfect site for a Chartist mosaic. Such features are commonplace in most Spanish markets, depicting local events and features.

Give the site to the revivalists and ask them to help provide towards its funding. Even Mr Michael Sheen and our two MPs might help financially – after all, words are cheap.

Incidentally, I believe people who blow up telephone boxes are either criminals, terrorists or both. My, times have changed, except in Newport of course.

Mr Gibson and his taskforce are trying to move us forward by providing their 50-plus ideas to help do so. It’s the 21st century after all, not the 19th. Newport is not a museum yet.

But our ‘Great Leader’ Mr Bright has responded, unsurprisingly, with “we could all have written down these ideas”. Well, Mr Bright, we’re still waiting for your bright ideas, part of the role for which you are being paid. Oh please don’t suggest any more Chartist events, it’s 2014 now.
