Policy confusion

First published in Letters

I DON’T know if I’m imagining but it seems to me that Newport City Council is being pushed into some very dodgy Conservative policies of privatisation of local services?

First the very strange decision to get rid of the Chartist’s Mural and destroy the cultural history of Newport’s very socialist past - and they hope we’ll forget about that one, now they are looking at privatising leisure services (in other words letting a trust run our leisure services) Now correct me if I’m wrong but trusts also make money, so unless that money comes back directly to the people of Newport - who will gain the profit?

Sounds like privatisation through the back door to me.

AS Newport Leisure Centres loose money at present it saves Newport money by getting rid of them. They are not core council functions in any case and in general the private sector does it better

Many parents of disabled children in Newport were sent letters last week telling them their support has been withdrawn and carers sacked, it is to take place on 1st April. Yesterday we read of a deaf and blind woman having her carer removed to save money,MADNESS ! if they aren't rationing support TO the most vulnerable, then we can only assume they are out to deprive everyone. The deaf-blind woman was found eating green bread, it had gone bad and she couldn't see it.

What SS/LA are saying is all have to now apply for direct payment, which THEY as the last word on validating that benefit, are also refusing to endorse too. A carer for an autistic child near me, said he would never work for social services or Newport again, and he said many shared his view because in effect all money and service funding has been taken away. SS won't cover the care bill, and won't endorse DP to cover it either.

This proves the the policy is to attack the most vulnerable and put them to the sword to save money and NOT, to ensure support only goes to the most deserving. No-one deserves anything now, not even the disabled child.

Quite right. They should divert the huge sums going into the Welsh language to sort the injustices you highlight.

I get the distinct impression you have lost the point. Each local authority decides its own priorities of care. The issue I pointed out was there are no longer ANY care priorities and the central funding via the DWP, we have no control over, that is done by Tories in London. Why divert attention away from real issues, to have a go at something entirely different.

That's right. And WAG have the opportunity to increase grants to councils. Instead they squander the money elsewhere. It's all about priorities. The ones you highlight Merv are greater than where they spend the money. Don't you get that?
