Tough decisions

First published in Letters

MANY would agree with the Argus editorial comment (January 29) that, in a climate of savage Tory-led Westminster Government cuts, “The role of every councillor now is to make tough decisions or come up with innovative alternatives”.

Of course, your regular correspondent, anarchist Terry Banfield, proposes the innovative alternative for councillors of breaking the law and refusing to make any savings at all.

But back in the real world, our Labour-led Caerphilly Council is working hard to ensure that the £14.5 million cuts we’ve been forced to make in 2014/15 will have as little impact as possible on the valued services we provide for residents who are already hard-hit by the Tories’ cost of living crisis.

You're making cuts to vital services we paid for to;

- Bail out bankers who gambled away tens of billions and are only too happy to socialise the consequences, whilst our government lobbys in Europe to protect their bonuses.

- Pay for the staggering cost of illegal and immoral wars costing us more billions... and let's not also forget that after taking a hatchet to our armed forces the government still plans to spend almost £160,000,000,000 on new weapons by 2022.

- Subsidise already incredibly wealthy corporations who dodge their tax bills whilst ripping us off left right and centre.

Personally I not only agree with Mr. Banfield, I think you should be shot for not resisting. You're a collaborator.

I 100% agree with you mushroom, but whats your alternative? - round up the bankers and strip them of their assets?

realistically cuts have to be made?

I think stripping the bankers of their assets should be the bare minimum response. Iceland have the right idea - they jailed the bankers responsible for their crisis and I think such a proposal, if put the the British public, would receive resounding support - yet it isn't even on the table.

As for alternatives - I can't pretend that I have all the answers but I do believe that right now is the time to start pushing for some really radical alternatives to the way we run our society, and huge changes are needed to reverse the abuse of power that the political and economic elites have used to destroy our lives.
