“SHOCKING” statistics are revealed by think-tank Centre for Cities (Argus, January 30) including Newport, which had the second highest carbon emissions per person of the 64 largest UK cities in 2011.

Paul Flynn, MP for Newport West has said that “a possible explanation is that the M4 motorway runs through the heart of Newport”. Would he now include the increased volume of traffic on our A roads and residential streets? A prime example of increased air pollution is Bank Street, St Julian’s, since the building, by Newport City Council, of the Glan Usk Primary school.

Newport city Labour-led council is planning 248 “dwellings”, including vehicular access and parking etc, adjacent to the school.

So we can probably look forward to further air pollution in the St Julian’s area of the city.
