I WAS interested to read recent correspondence regarding the poor state of the Pitches at Glebelands, Newport, during this winter, and the amount of games that have had to be postponed due to the conditions.

It will be of interest to your correspondent that I used that area in the period 1951 to 1957 when I attended St Julian’s High School, Newport.

St Julian’s Rec, as it was then known, was used by the school for games, and each winter, we lost a great deal of matches there due to the poor weather conditions which prevail in the winter.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s I ran football teams in the Newport Junior League and the Glebelands caused us many a fixture pile up, as did Coronation Park and Tredegar Park.

It never worried us though as we always knew that we would catch up on our fixtures when the weather improved.

Perhaps the winter just gone which we are told was the wettest on record, has a lot to do with the conditions at Glebelands!
