Monopoly tweak

First published in Letters

I’M ALL in favour of a Newport edition of the Monopoly board game in principle, but can I suggest they make one or two small changes to the rules to better match the setting.

For example, instead of receiving £200, all players could be required to pay a fee (or ‘toll’) every time they pass the ‘Go’ square. This square could also be renamed ‘Severn Bridge’.

Chance and Community chest cards would also need to be twice the size, so that they could be printed in a dual language format. Perhaps the ‘Super Tax’ square could be renamed ‘Welsh Language Translation Tax’ Bryan Wilkes Penrhiw Terrace Newport

Instead of Park Lane and Mayfair we could have Paul Flynn's first and second houses. All other properties start out mortgaged to the hilt. :)

Oh except for one which you claim by being elected to parliament through the community chance. Pays £19034 and is then conveniently forgotten for the rest of the game.

Instead of the water and electricity squares we could just rename them to a contribution to the French economy.

Bank error in your favour? I think this unlikely, maybe Bank bailout instead, pay for every throw of the dice till you are bankrupt.

As for four railway stations, you'd have to decrease the rent as the trains don't run between them all.

Free parking? That won't work for Newport. Maybe a go shopping in Cwmbran square.

Pill magistrates court instead of Bow street maybe? Could put it next to the freemasons lodge...
