Warmongers out

First published in Letters

OUR EASTER message from the Welsh peace movement is – Stop the NATO warmongers from gathering in Newport in September.

NATO was formed after the Second World War, with purely defensive aims, but over the years it has grown out of all proportion.

It took on the offensive with the bombing of Libya and former Yugoslavia and drones in Pakistan, and now it is sending ships to the Black Sea region to threaten Russia over its stand in the Ukraine. Suddenly the world has become an even more dangerous place.

At the Celtic Manor, Newport, world leaders will meet to discuss plans to further commit our taxes to fund their wars. Meanwhile, we are witnessing the unthinkable – thousands relying on foodbanks for survival.

We'll probably be fighting Russia by then in the Ukraine, despite us not giving a hoot about the country, we see UK politicians sabre rattling and completely embarrassing the hell out of us, we cannot manage to protect the UK, and they want us faffing about in a country that wants to be Russian anyway. Can't we bring the election on a bit earlier and pass a law to send those idiots out there instead ?

One thing that I find somewhat curious is that although Paul Flynn condemns Israel for using phosphorous bombs he has asked us all to welcome the NATO delegation with open arms. However NATO use phosphorous bombs too. I guess this begs the question just what is it about Israel - in Mr Flynn's opinion - that makes them worse than other countries who do precisely the same? Or am I being disingenuous here?

What Warmongers? As far as I am aware NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. This organisation formed to protect members where the old Soviet Union may decide to attack, invade or threaten member states. Since the break up of the Soviet Union all that has happened is the independent States in the old Western Soviet union realise they are better off with the European Union rather than Communism.
NATO are not warmongers.

I didn't find a viable link between what happens in the Ukraine to UK food banks, too much of a shift for me !

Hi Katy, it is because Israel used illegally used phosphorus bombs in heavily populated civilian areas. NATO doesn't as a rule use phosphorus weapons as NATO isn't a standing army but a treaty of member states. The US has used white phosphorus legally recently in Fallujah, Iraq though this was not as an incendiary weapon but as an obscurant.

The thing is most Western Armed Forces don't need to use cruel barbaric and really rather crude methods to kill, we have some really rather spectacular weapons that can annihilate the enemy much more quickly and efficiently.
