Pothole problem

First published in Letters

I WOULD like to assure Jan Reed (Pothole problem, 24 June) that a number of streets in this area are on our list to be resurfaced.

Unfortunately, Torfaen has a deteriorating highway network that has not been helped by the extremely cold and wet winters of the last few years.

This year our highways engineers have identified around £4m worth of resurfacing work that is needed across Torfaen’s road network. Our budget allocation for maintenance schemes for 2014/15 is just £900,000 which only enables us to carry out around a quarter of the schemes identified.

Difficult choices have to be made, with public safety always our priority. The highway network is regularly inspected to ensure public safety and any defects that meet the councils repair criteria are auctioned to be repaired as soon as possible.

If residents have any concerns about particular pot holes in their area, then please report them to Call Torfaen on 01495 762200.

Cllr John Cunningham Torfaen County Borough Council

Right then Mr Cunningham....when will our street be resurfaced.

Over 20 years ago Salisbury Terrace, Varteg, was scrabbled and resurfaced, as far as up to the last house.

In was promised 'faithfully' that ours would be done the next year.

That was twenty years ago....can you assure me, preferably in writing this time, the job will be done some time soon? a date would be helpful when replying, if you ever do reply.

Also, half way down Shop Road Varteg, there is a rail bridge across the defunct rail line to Blaenavon, now a cycle track, that road was resurfaced a couple of decades ago too, but the bridge was left , when I queried it, I was told they didn't do the bridge because their machinery would not be suitable, but that the bridge would be done, by hand, again, the next year.
So far it hasn't been done, will that too ever get done as promised?

Answer please Mr Cunningham.

It is one thing for a road to be "on the list", it is quite another for that road to actually be resurfaced.

Naturally, the more regularly travelled roads will need to take priority but there should also be a rolling programme of ongoing works for the lesser roads as well. This would reduce the need for more expensive 'temporary' repairs to be made to the same roads on a regular basis

Two years ago we had notices through our doors asking us not to park on the road outside as it was going to be re surfaced in the next two days. Well we waited and the paper was put over the drains then nothing. All along Eastfield Rd and College glade rd. We still are waiting. They have filled a couple of inches deep potholes, caused by the buses coming up the hill.
