I WISH someone would educate your correspondent Andrew Nutt. He makes a career out of attacking our Welsh Assembly and his local council.

His latest attack on Caerphilly County Borough Council beggars belief. He attacks us for even considering a report suggesting a whole range of options for how to deal with the savage Tory Government cuts imposed on our Council next year. He must know the Council’s finance comes from two sources – one third being the council tax and two-thirds from Government grants (which is in fact our own money, paid in income tax).

We have already suffered two years of cuts totalling £8 million-plus; this year could be as high as £40 million-plus. Any working housewife knows with that percentage of cuts her household budget will mean doing away with bread and jam and just surviving on bread alone.

The £40 million cut has to come from somewhere. The services we provide come under two headings – one is statutory, such as children’s education, some aspects of social services, planning etc. Cutting these services would be breaking the law. Therefore, we are left with reducing the non-statutory services.
