MY FATHER, David Winmill, was in the Territorial Army prior to the First World War I. His unit was the Royal Field Artillery Newport. They were mobilised in July 1914 and sent to Pembroke.
I can find very little information about this unit. Did they go to war as a battery or were they sent to other field regiments? I still have my father’s medals. He was 745937 Gunner David Winmill.
I know he was wounded and gassed and his regiment supported an Australian division at one time.
I have a silver picture frame engraved ‘war souvenir from St Mellons Presbyterian Church Friends 1919 – Gunner David Winmill, Royal Field Artillery.’ There seems to be very little information about Newport Gunners.
I wonder if there is any more information out there as the son of a gunner and also an ex-gunner?
I can be contacted at the address below or on 01633 612095.
