READING about the theft of the replica Jeep from the vintage car rally at Tredegar House reminds me of another incident involving a Jeep at the house many years ago.
In the late 1950s, some friends of mine were asked by the nuns to clear an area that was once the menagerie (where the caravan site is now). Cutting through very heavy overgrown brambles and bushes they noticed something white, and as they got closer it turned out to be a white-star painted on the bonnet of a Willys Jeep. Over the next few days they managed to inflate the tyres, put petrol in the tank and scrounge a battery and to their amazement it started when they tried it.
It is thought the Jeep was hidden by some American troops stationed there and they were possibly sent away for the D-Day landings before they could use it.
