I WOULD like to address a number of points raised by Bryn Jones in his recent letter (wheelie bins, 4th December). Most of the plastic produced by the average household in Torfaen, such as yoghurt pots, ice cream and margarine tubs, microwave food trays, detergent bottles, plastic lids etc, can be recycled.

If Mr Jones’ plastic containers are regularly being left behind by the collection crews then I would urge him to contact us directly so we can investigate. Under the new, smaller bin system, families of six or more will continue to be able to request a review of their circumstances to see if they qualify for additional capacity.

It may interest Mr Jones to know that we recently carried out an experiment to trial the new system with a number of families in Torfaen. One of the families was a family of five, with two children in nappies, who were more than able to cope with the new system if they used our kerbside recycling facilities to their full potential.
