IT WAS great news to learn that, Anthony Scott, `Scotty`had been awarded the MBE in the New Year’s Honours List. While he has been away from his city for many years, he has always remained a true Newport boy, proud of his roots and always asking what`s going on in the `Port . The Argus paid a fine tribute to him and his achievements, but there was one glaring omission; no mention of his glorious years playing for Barnardtown AFC in the Newport and District League during the Sixties.

Some would say that this was the pinnacle of his long footballing career. I`m pleased to say that whilst the Barnardtown boys have long since given up chasing the leather football, but they still meet on a regular basis to have a few pints. and apportion blame for those defeats of many years ago!

While the winds of time have blown them to many parts of the country and indeed the world, they still find time to make the gathering. They come from Sweden, America, the Midlands and London (Scotty) and are living testament to the sporting adage – the older we get, the better we were. Well done, Tony, from all your Barnardtown mates. It will be your pleasure to buy the first round at our next meeting on 2nd. February 2. Don`t be late!
