MR ROBERT Brown of Crosskeys (Letters, 6th January) is correct to the extent that it means a decrease for senior railcard holders in that a previous discount has been amended to 34 per cent, one of the consolations being that it was retrospective from 2nd January 2 2015 and present card holders may use their current railcard and receive 50 per cent until it expires.

The sting in the tail is the concession. To get 34 per cent discount, just turn up today, show your concessionary pass when you buy your ticket. Finally, people who were not aware of the change until they read the Argus insert will turn up with the old fare and ticket collectors will be faced with confrontation.

Having spent a not inconsiderable amount of money and time on Monday evening on the phone to find that the the Arriva staff at Cardiff were unaware of the change. To their credit, they arranged for the ticket price controller to phone me at home which he did reasonably quickly. Is it fair (fare) to be treated like this?
