RECENTLY, the Labour Party in England has been accused of being anti-business, but if anything the attitudes of our own Labour-controlled Assembly and Newport City Council are even more confusing. The Business Argus of January 27 reported that the Megabowl site at Newport Retail Park in Spytty has finally got planning permission for Sports Direct to convert part of it into a megastore after several years of wrangling and jumping through hoops.

In complete contrast, the same paper reported on another page that D&E Scrap Metal of Adelaide Street, Newport had received lots of assistance plus an Assembly grant. Nothing personal, but since when did a scrap metal business need taxpayers’ money to help it along?

The banks aren’t everybody’s flavour of the month, but I think their financial acumen is more in tune than politicians out on the campaign trail.
