FOR five years I was a pupil at Newport High School for Boys during the 1940s when the school was on the original site on Queen’s Hill.

I am hoping one of your readers will be able to point me in the right direction to acquire a NHSOB scarf and tie. I do have an Old Boys tie showing the Newport coat of arms which relates to the school’s 1896 to 1996 centenary. The normal old school tie wore out years ago and my scarf has gone ‘awol’.

I have recently acquired a book on the school, The First Sixty Years, written by one of the masters who taught when I was a pupil.

The South Wales Argus is mentioned as having supplied some photographs. These include pictures of the masters, one of whom used to say he would “dump us in the mud of the Usk” when we met with his displeasure! I wonder how such a phrase would go down these days!

So far, all efforts to trace a scarf and tie have failed so I am hoping to hear that there is someone out there who can help. I have tried the current school at Bettws but they are unable to help.
