I REFER to last week’s letter entitled ‘Scrap the Tolls’ and, of course, being a private motorist, I wholeheartedly agree. How good it is of this government, just before the election, to announce that when the current contract finishes they will then be magnanimous enough to remove the VAT currently imposed on the fee.

A good saving, you might add. Of course, the sucker punch is they are reducing the cost to us by 20 per cent, but increasing their own existing revenue by 300 per cent as they will then keep all of the fee.

Four years of that would amount to something like £1 billion and would pay for the Newport motorway bypass, whichever scheme is adopted after 30 years of going around the same bush and getting nowhere.
