COMMENTS in the media in the past weeks about various company and charities pestering people via telephone and mail with tragic consequences brought to mind to me a classic case about this situation. Part of my charity work is visiting the elderly, sick, housebound and families in need.
When entering the house on one of my regular visits to an elderly gentleman, he confided in me he was at his wit’s end with all the demand on his meagre finances. This gentleman could never say no to a good cause, consequently he ended up with more and more demands.
His other problem was he had just retired and his pension was small. He asked me what he should do. I told him to write to all those concerned asking them not to send him any more demands, and if they still sent demands, to put them in the bin. Personally I believe that telephone sales to peoples’ homes should be banned (something our MPs never talk about) considering the other numerous ways of advertising.
