I WAS gobsmacked to read of Newport City Council’s need to spend £200,000 of their budget on advice on how to run the city’s "streetscene department" which deals with refuse collection, road sweeping, fly-tipping, recycling, etc. Whatever happened to the system of promoting within? Surely the council has enough employees who have been employed in this department for years with the knowledge and experience needed to run the department successfully without the expensive need of outside consultants? So, come on Newport Council, start looking for the talent that could be right under your noses.
