YOUR news story (21 July 2015) about the Rough Guide 'moving' our beloved Transporter Bridge to Cardiff reminded me of a similar gaffe in the 2009 Mini Rough Guide To Wales.
Newport was described as being in the Wye Valley and then dispensed with in forty words including the advice to travellers that Newport 'is unlikely to feature on a swift tour of Wales'.
Even more galling was the fact that the 2009 guide was 'produced in conjunction with Visit Wales' – the former Wales Tourist Board – who surely should have known better.
I did complain to Visit Wales but got no satisfactory response.
The problem with these guides is they are in a mindset that thinks all tourists want is sun, sand and scenery, ignoring or downplaying the historical, cultural and industrial heritage aspects of tourism.
Newport has plenty to offer in that regard, including Tredegar House, St Woolos Cathedral, the Castle, Fourteen Locks, the Medieval Ship, the Wetlands – I could go on, but I’m sure you get the point!
