I LOVE our city and have, like many been concerned over the years about what has been happening to it, as it has been mismanaged by councils of both persuasion, politicians and by big businesses who have owned masses of the city centre.
However I’m looking forward with anticipation and hope to seeing the new development, but unless the council and our representatives do more, Newport will still struggle and suffer, particularly as shops move out of Commercial Street to go into the new development or leave the city.
The prospect of a further development on the old Sainsbury’s site is hopeful, as is the former Megabowl site at Spytty that was recently sold, however, what Newport needs is continual development and a joined up plan.
We need to return buses to drop off at High Street if the market and top end of the city are to return to their heyday with full, attractive and functioning arcades.
We need more free parking and I would also say that we need either an Usk Barrage with the addition of a marina and the money that this brings in from electricity generation or a tidal lagoon with similar electrical generation that can be sold back to the National Grid, after all we do have the second highest river range in the world, so why not put it to use?
Including salmon runs in either should enable the much decried river fishing to continue, and the money generated from the sale of electricity could more than cover any dredging needed to prevent silt up of the river.
Cardiff has its Bay, Bristol, has its Docks and Watershed area and Swansea will have a tidal lagoon.
Newport needs this to take us even further forward; along with the joint city approach proposed by the Welsh Assembly.
Our historic piecemeal approach does us no favours, and leaves us with an unsightly waterway and piecemeal developments that do nothing to enhance the city in regard to a constructive concentrated approach to enable resilience, growth and beauty.
