RE NORMAN Plaisted’s letter (Argus August 10:  I would like to correct Mr Plaisted on a few points.
The meeting was a ward surgery attended by Cllr Ibrahim Hayat and representatives of the police, council wardens, NCH, Charter and a small group of residents.
There was a discussion on the viability of setting up a designated ‘safe area’ where the street prostitutes could go, away from residential areas, possibly on an industrial area car park.
The idea was based on (allegedly) successful pilot schemes in other areas and the girls agree to conduct their business in one place, making it safer for them, and also easier for outreach workers to help them.
At no time was there any mention of setting up a brothel, designated or otherwise.
The residents at the meeting made it known, in no uncertain terms, that the idea was a non-starter, and once the story was published in the Argus the mooted plan was shelved.
