THE new plan for the old Sainsburys site is alarming. Cramming 144 residential homes, 601 student places plus an 84 bed hotel on the supermarket site is over-development. Congestion and parking problems are certain.
Other Newport planned and existing developments have inadequate parking and create chaos to neighbouring areas. One group of houses was built on an existing car park and has brought parking headaches to the neighbourhood.
I attended a presentation for the large Whiteheads site and expressed grave doubts about the lack of parking places planned.
When Ringland was designed in the 1950s one parking place was allocated for every 18 dwellings! We should have learned.
Exciting times are ahead for Newport. We have a group of splendid new buildings along the riverside, including the City Campus and the Riverfront.
We are all eager for new developments but thorough scrutiny beforehand is essential. This is not about gimmicks and making money, its the task of reshaping a proud Newport Nouveau that will endure and prosper for generations.
