IT WOULD be a great shame to see Newport’s Castle fall into further disrepair, as after all the town (now city) was named after it. Newport’s original and proper name is Castell Newydd ar Wysg – Newcastle upon Usk. A much nicer name than Newport! So, perhaps some effort should be made to restore our heritage namesake.
